چکیده

Highly processable bulk metallic glass alloys in the Pt–Co–Ni–Cu–P system were discovered. The alloys show low liquidus temperature below 900 K, excellent processability with low critical cooling rate reflecting in maximum casting thicknesses in quartz tubes of up to 20 mm, and a large supercooled liquid region. The Pt57.5Cu14.7Ni5.3P22.5 composition has a liquidus temperature of 795 K, a glass transition temperature of 508 K with a supercooled liquid region of 98 K. For medical and jewelry applications a Ni-free alloy, Pt60Cu16Co2P22 was discovered with a liquidus temperature of 881 K, a glass transition temperature of 506 K, and a supercooled liquid region of 63 K. Glass formation was observed in a wider composition range. Vickers hardness of these alloys is in the 400 Hv range. The alloys can be processed in the supercooled liquid region in air without any measurable oxidation. In this region, a large processing window is available in which the material does not embrittle. Embrittlement in these alloys is correlated with crystallization. It can be avoided as long as substantial crystallization does not take place during isothermal processing in the supercooled liquid region. Also, liquid processing can be performed in air when flux with B2O3. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1738945#

Large supercooled liquid region and phase separation in the Zr–Ti–Ni–Cu–Be bulk metallic glasses

Results of calorimetric, differential thermal analysis, and structural measurements are presented for a series of bulk metallic glass forming compositions in the Zr–Ti–Cu–Ni–Be alloy system. The calorimetric data for five alloys, prepared along the tie line between phase separating and nonphase separating compositions, show that the transition from phase separating to nonphase separating behavi...

Formation of Ti-Zr-Cu-Ni bulk metallic glasses

Formation of bulk metallic glass in quaternary Ti-Zr-Cu-Ni alloys by relatively slow cooling from the melt is reported. Thick strips of metallic glass were obtained by the method of metal mold casting. The glass forming ability of the quaternary alloys exceeds that of binary or ternary alloys containing the same elements due to the complexity of the system. The best glass forming alloys such as...

On the Fragility of Bulk Metallic Glass Forming Liquids

In contrast to pure metals and most non-glass forming alloys, metallic glass-formers are moderately strong liquids in terms of fragility. The notion of fragility of an undercooling liquid reflects the sensitivity of the viscosity of the liquid to temperature changes and describes the degree of departure of the liquid kinetics from the Arrhenius equation. In general, the fragility of metallic gl...

The effect of silicon on the glass forming ability of the Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 bulk metallic glass forming alloy during processing of composites

Composites of the Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 bulk metallic glass, reinforced with up to 30 vol % SiC particles are synthesized and characterized. Results based on x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning Auger microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry ~DSC! are presented. During processing of the composites, a TiC layer forms around the SiC particles and Si diffuses into the Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8...
